Welcome to Naval War College International Alumni Portal
In the early 1980s, the Indian Navy decided to setup a College of Naval Warfare (CNW) to institutionalize the training of senior officers on defence planning, strategic and operational subjects, with a view to promote a culture of strategic and operational thinking.
Karanja (off Mumbai) was chosen as the site location of CNW due to its spaciousness and remote location – away from the hustle and bustle of Mumbai city. CNW was inaugurated on 17 September 1988, by the then Defence Minister, Shri KC Pant. The Government of India sanction for the College was accorded, without manpower in 1994. The first Naval Higher Command Course (NHCC) commenced in 1988, followed by the first Senior Officer Study Period (SOSP) in 1999; and the first Technical management Course (TMC) in 1994.
From a modest beginning in 1988, the College continued to expand over the years under the guidance of Headquarters, Western Naval Command. Vacancies for NHCC were also allotted to the Indian Army, Indian Air Force as well as the Indian Coast Guard with the aim of achieving jointness
Linkages were established with Mumbai University in 2003 for affiliation and award of MPhil Degree for NHCC participants; and Post Graduate Diploma in Management Studies from Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies for TMC participants.
On 18 August 2010, Government of India sanction was accorded for renaming CNW as the ‘Naval War College’ (NWC); and for its relocation to Goa.
